this face was my first portrait that i ever painted. i did it as practice for a commissioned piece that was supposed to be of the “old world” style for a belgian pub. the final piece turned out to be the most amazing painting i had ever done up to that point. as i’ve heard from fellow artists, commissioned pieces rarely turn out well. the client always has something else in mind because of their emotional attachment to the outcome and when the artist puts their style onto the commissioner’s subject it can fail. and i mean fail in a huge way. long story short the final piece was 4’x3′ and at the last minute after several approvals and showings to the buyer she changed her mind. she paid me but didn’t end up hanging it in the pub. i am still trying to this day to get a photo of the final piece because throughout the entire process i was unsure of my ability and right before my eyes my talent appeared. i hope to post a photo of the painting someday.
